“No borders, just horizons – only Freedom.” - Amelia Earhart

Our next dialogue with dessert buffet and book giftival will be this coming Wednesday January 8 starting at 6 PM, at the Humainologie Gallery & Store, 1514 Seventh Street SW.

If it interests you we could use as our topic “Existentialism: How would you define yourself?” Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) and Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986) were companions and fellow philosophers, both existentialists. As such they took issue with the idea (from various religious perspectives) that God had made human beings with a purpose in mind (sort of like a pair of scissors, for which the purpose comes before the existence of the scissors). On the contrary, said the existentialists, your existence comes first; and in fact you are free to define your own purpose (your essence). You have the freedom to define yourself. In doing so, we set ourselves free. At any given moment, your thoughts and actions are in the process of writing the history of who you are.

We could take off from there.

Arthur

“Some of us have great runways already built for us. If you have one, take off! But if you don’t have one, realize it is your responsibility to grab a shovel and build one for yourself and for those who will follow after you.”

- Amelia Earhart (July 24, 1897 and disappeared July 2, 1937)
