David Barsamian (interviewing Noam Chomsky:) What we are facing is often described as unprecedented.  A pandemic, climate catastrophe, and always lurking off center stage, nuclear annihilation.  Three of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Noam Chomsky:  I can add a fourth: the impending destruction of what remains of American democracy, and the shift of the United States toward a deeply authoritarian, also a protofascist, state, when the Republicans come back into office, which looks likely.  So, that’s four horses.  And that has a big effect on the world and on the other three.  -        Excerpt from one of the interviews with Noam Chomsky included in the book, Notes on Resistance (Noam Chomsky, interviews by David Barsamian, 2022)

Greta Thunberg had said she wants us to behave as if the house is on fire, because it is.   We humans have a very dangerous tendency to avoid facing reality until it is too late.  I can see this pattern of behavior in myself.  And yet, by working together month by month, year by year, we can do better. Indeed, we have already shown that we can. Together, we have been changing Calgary into a catalyst for a healthy global community.  The recent addition of a Culture of Peace Month to the city’s calendar is one of many steps we have taken.  A Calgary peace museum would be another game-changing step forward.

This Tuesday November 8 is a golden opportunity for each of us to respond to the challenges that Greta Thunberg, David Barsamian, and Noam Chomsky have called to our attention.

The topic is Building A Culture of Peace in Our Communities.  It's at Parkdale United Church, 2919 8th Avenue NW, starting at 7:00 PM

You can join by Zoom:  Topic: Humainologie Dialogue Session - Presented by Anya and ChetnaTime: Nov 8, 2022 07:00 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada)Join Zoom Meetinghttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83868035522?pwd=MDJlWGZQZThzYkRZbVJTMHQ3Tm5Sdz09Meeting

Passcode: 12345

Anya and Chetna will facilitate.  Their emphasis is on what one person can do to change the course of history.

Anya writes, “building a culture of peace starts with us, individuals, and … our actions have big consequences. We want to encourage and inspire people to look at what they are doing to create a culture of peace in their own lives.”

They’ll walk us through the “Building A Culture of Peace” poster exhibit.  Then we’ll discuss how we can create a culture of peace in our community.   At the end of the session, they will ask each of us to share how we can create a culture of peace in our own life, in 100 words or less. With our permission, they will include our words for the project: “A Thousand Voices of Light Creating a Culture of Peace.” Contributions others have made to the 1000 voices can be seen here: 1000 Voices (calgaryfloatinglanterns.com) The goal is to use these entries to create an installation for the public to enjoy

Between now and the event, I’ll send additional background material which to me seems essential for building a culture of peace in our communities. Good night, and good luck.  Arthur
