“Before our white brothers arrived to make us civilized men, we didn’t have any kind of prison. Because of this, we had no delinquents. Without a prison, there can be no delinquents. We had no locks nor keys and therefore among us there were no thieves. When someone was so poor that he couldn’t afford a horse, a tent, or a blanket, he would, in that case, receive it all as a gift. We were too uncivilized to give great importance to private property. We didn’t know any kind of money and consequently, the value of a human being was not determined by his wealth. We had no written laws laid down, no lawyers, no politicians, therefore we were not able to cheat and swindle one another. We were really in bad shape before the white men arrived and I don’t know how to explain how we were able to manage without these fundamental things that (so they tell us) are so necessary for a civilized society.” - John Fire Lame Deer, Native Indian Chief
“Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.” - Archimedes
Give us a game irresistible enough, and a feature of the game that steadily builds the ability of all players to dialogue constructively with even their worst enemies, and we shall change the course of history. Our society does not have the level of trust that many Indigenous societies had (as indicated by the quote from John Fire Lame Deer), so we should design our Dialogue and Democracy Game with that in mind. We’ll work on this for about fifteen minutes each Wednesday, and with luck we could begin testing a prototype for our game before autumn. To help with the process of designing the game, I plan to send you a synopsis of James Hoggan’s book, I’m Right and You’re an Idiot: The Toxic State of Public Discourse and How to Clean It Up. With luck, I’ll be able to send this to you before next Wednesday.
Christina McInnis is organizing the content for next Wednesday (April 28), and from what I understand it is going to be a truly extraordinary creative dialogue. I should be able to send you her orientation to the dialogue within the next day or so.
