"Writing is a beautiful way to let out pain. When you put your story out there, you release it. Once it is no longer buried or stuck within you, you are free to move forward.” - Sandra Marinella, The Story You Need to Tell: Writing to Heal from Trauma, Illness, or Loss "Words make it possible for our thoughts to travel through time and survive us.” - Sandra Marinella, The Story You Need to Tell: Writing to Heal from Trauma, Illness, or Loss “I can shake off everything as I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn." - Anne Frank In March of this year, the World Health Organization reported a 25% increase in anxiety and depression worldwide since the pandemic began COVID-19 pandemic triggers 25% increase in prevalence of anxiety and depression worldwide (who.int) Howie Mandel – a Canadian comedian and actor diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder – has observed “There isn’t anybody out there who doesn’t have a mental health issue, whether it’s depression, anxiety, or how to cope with relationships.” Writing stories can improve our mental health, so let’s get started. Who knows, maybe over the next five years in Calgary, we might improve mental health by 25% just by writing stories! We would have to run the experiment to know the result. Yes, let’s just do it! Zoe will facilitate our next story-writing workshop on Tuesday, September 13, at the Central Library. She has booked a room for 6:00 to 7:30 PM. We must finish by 7:30, so it will be important to do advance preparation and be on time for the workshop. One way to get your story started is to “steal like an artist” in a very structured way, as described here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCVZt9qIgec&t=829s Keep in mind that it’s important to write a lot of stories, and not get stuck on coming up with a “good” story. By setting a time to start and a time limit, you can get your dopamine and adrenaline levels up, get breathless, and thus improve your mental health. However, the best way to approach it is the way that works best for you. Toot sweet, Arthur
