“The most widely accepted measure for calculating income inequality is a century-old formula called the Gini coefficient. It's a gold standard for economists around the globe, along with the World bank, the CIA, and the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. What it reveals is startling. Today the United States has the most unequal society of all developed nations. America’s level of inequality is comparable to that of Russia, China, Argentina, and the war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo.” - Jessica Bruder, Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-first Century At our creative dialogue tonight we will first pick a theme for our dialogues in April, then examine this week’s topic, Income Inequality: Causes, Consequences, and Remedies based on that book synopsis I sent you recently of Robert Reich’s book. One of the related questions I sent was about the idea of a Book Club. I’ll expand on that question here: Would you like to do a Book Club, in which you tell us about a book you have read recently? (There are very easy and simple ways to do this, which would encourage everyone to participate.) Also at our creative dialogue each week I hope to advance our awareness of the history and culture of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, and with each step to make us better prepared to contribute to reconciliation. Here, I want to provide a few links that can help us with that process. The Calgary Foundation provides information about land acknowledgement: https://calgaryfoundation.org/about-us/reconciliation/land-acknowledgement/ Here is the website of the Metis Nation of Alberta http://albertametis.com and the website of the Tsuut’ina Nation https://tsuutinanation.com/ The Tsuut’ina 145 Reserve is located southwest of Calgary, immediately west of Crowchild Trail as you drive toward Glenmore Trail. Once again I have appended the Zoom link for tonight’s dialogue below.
