"We can't become what we need to be by remaining what we are." - Oprah Winfrey “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make." - Jane Goodall “Since the jobs that our preschoolers will do probably don’t exist yet, our priority is to teach them the skills to adapt and inquire and question and cooperate…life skills. So much more useful than rigid concepts such as the alphabet.” - Caroline Bellouse Hello Dialogue Artists! Our theme for the month of March is Personal Growth, and at our creative dialogue next Wednesday March 31, Zenia Mulhern will lead us in the topic Personal Growth: Many Ways to Map the Territory. Zenia has provided an orientation to the dialogue, including a series of evocative questions. It is appended herewith. And here is the link to the Zoom session provided by Shinobu: Topic: Humainologie creative dialogue Time: March 31, 2021 06:30 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada) Every week on Wed, until Apr 28, 2021, 9 occurrence(s) Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83720756307?pwd=WVU2OGo3ZjMzWVMwdlVZUzY1RVMwdz09 Meeting ID: 837 2075 6307 Passcode: 12345 Arthur Zenia’s introduction and orientation to our creative dialogue on the topic Personal Growth: Many Ways to Map the Territory We’ll explore personal growth through a holistic lens, together. I will be pulling information from many subjects, including biology, neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, spirituality, minority studies, social work, and physical health and wellness. Humbly, my information comes from my experience of undergraduate studies in many of these areas, as well as my work in various social work and teaching settings, and my continued training in, reading on, meditation on, and discussion of the topic areas listed above. I am not an expert in any of these fields but am a curious and passionate life-long-learner. I can't wait to hear all of your ideas on the material I have put together, and more! First, I will discuss a developmental model of personal growth, and I will practice applying this developmental “map” to personal growth, as a “territory”. For example, I will discuss “reward systems” and how they can be related to personal growth. Next, I will outline a process for personal expansion and what steps can be involved in that process. I will also discuss the idea of personal growth as personal “change”, and what that can entail. Lastly, I discuss challenges to personal expansion and also tools to support it. I have prepared many questions in my outline to prompt thinking and discussion at various points. I have included 5 of the questions below, which you can think about in advance of dialogue if you want to, although no preparation is necessary! Some of the questions I will ask include: ·How can our approaches as caregivers or teachers to children impact their personal growth? AND/OR How can our approaches in relationship to our family, friends, or partners relate to their personal growth? ·How do we understand or misunderstand health status and mental health struggles in relation to popular concepts of personal growth and achievement? What about socio-economic factors? (I'm going to discuss Covid, here) ·How can various understandings of the “self” impact approaches to personal growth? ·How can personal trauma affect our movement through the process of personal growth? ·What does your relationship with your body and with your feelings have to do with your personal growth? I will provide much more context for these questions on Wednesday, so don't worry if you're not sure how to tackle them at first glance. I hope our dialogue will help us tie some seemingly unrelated pieces together and help us explore personal growth from different angles.
