“The society that loses its grip on the past is in danger, for it produces men who know nothing but the present, and who are not aware that life had been, and could be, different from what it is.” - Aristotle

“Fanaticism in many lands has surfaced as the greatest threat to the world. Indifference to its consequences would be a serious mistake.” – Elie Wiesel

“One defeats the fanatic precisely by not being a fanatic oneself.” - George Orwell

We have learned about the rigged system in which the rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer - because the rich are making the rules. Many Americans are facing extreme challenges in their personal lives. The socioeconomic trends in North America – particularly in the United States - are having tragic consequences. So many things seem to be getting worse. The playwright Arthur Miller once observed, “The closer a man approaches tragedy the more intense is his concentration of emotion upon the fixed point of his commitment, which is to say the closer he approaches what in life we call fanaticism.” Tragedy can lead to fanaticism. Tyranny is never far away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHmTzFnymOM

“Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty” was a familiar reminder to the American public in the 1800s. Our weekly dialogues can help keep us alert.

Here are some good questions for our dialogue tomorrow, Wednesday November 17, on Cleaning Up the Toxic Culture We Live In. Please choose at least one of the questions to prepare your contributions to the event. Your imagination and wisdom are essential to our chances of cleaning up the toxic culture!

1. Based on your reading of the synopsis of the book Save Your City by Diane Kalen-Sukra. and assuming you had the opportunity to meet with the recently elected city council of Calgary, what is a good question you would like to ask the council?

2. Assuming you could create one project designed to clean up the toxic culture we live in; and assuming your project will become incredibly successful at transforming our city, inspiring similar projects all over the world, what would your project be? Please describe it in sufficient detail that we could get it started by Christmas.

3. What experiences have you yourself had since you lived in Calgary (or wherever you currently live) that provide evidence of the toxicity in our culture? What recent news (from such sources as the New York Times) provides such evidence?

4. Looking back on one such experience, can you imagine handling it any differently than how you did at the time? In other words, can you imagine a more effective way to detoxify the situation than how you handled it at the time?

5. What is a personal “toxic encounter” you can recall, in which you are especially pleased with how effective you were at detoxification?
