“The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” – Socrates “The map is not the territory.” - Alfred Korzybski “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” - Socrates Hello Dialogue Artists and Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Judy Johnson will facilitate our creative dialogue tonight on the topic of dogmatism. Here once again are the questions she has provided to get our own wisdom in motion for tonight: · Have you changed your mind about a belief you thought was absolutely true in young adulthood? · What happened that enabled you to change your mind? · Select one of your most cherished beliefs. What would it take for you to change your mind about it? · As a child, were you encouraged to think for yourself? I have begun using her list of thirteen features of dogmatism to examine my own choices, and perhaps to improve my own performance. I’ve appended the 13 features below this message again, for ease of access. Her website is at: www.dogmatism.ca. When I am trying to understand something, it helps me to look for things that are opposite from or contrasting with that thing I am trying to understand. In stark contrast to dogmatism was the wisdom of Socrates, with his emphasis on the importance of asking questions. Alfred Korzybski’s quote (above), echoing Socrates, keeps me mindful that what I think about any aspect of reality is not the reality itself. It’s just my way of thinking. Our creative dialogues are following in the footsteps of Socrates. Socrates’ emphasis on kindness (see quote above) may be useful when you are in the presence of a dogmatic person.
