“Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.” - Albert Einstein “It is no longer a choice, my friends, between violence and nonviolence. It is either nonviolence or nonexistence. And the alternative to disarmament, the alternative to a greater suspension of nuclear tests, the alternative to strengthening the United Nations and thereby disarming the whole world, may well be a civilization plunged into the abyss of annihilation, and our earthly habitat would be transformed into an inferno that even the mind of Dante could not imagine.” - Martin Luther King, Jr. “Any man’s death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind; therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.” - John Donne Canada does not have a peace museum, yet some years ago, in the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, it had a “peace exhibit” https://www.warmuseum.ca/event/peace-the-exhibition/ Ploughshares Calgary Society is proposing a peace museum for Calgary. It would connect Canadians and others who have long been thinking creatively about ways to foster genuine peace and a healthy global community. A Calgary peace museum could offer an alternative to thinking about peace inside the box of militarism. In my own way of thinking, establishing a peacebuilding museum in Calgary should be a priority for our city. A standing ovation is in order for Catherine Ford’s contribution to the Calgary Herald suggesting we give the Calgary peace museum a chance. https://epaper.calgaryherald.com/article/281672553745226 Ploughshares Calgary Society’s Trudy Govier will facilitate our creative dialogue this coming Tuesday September 20, to be held at the Parkdale United Church, 2919 Eighth Avenue NW, starting at 7:00 PM.
