Hello new members and Board members of the Calgary Social Capital Society,

You will have seen my synopsis of the book on successful aging several weeks ago, and tonight we are doing a creative session related to that theme.

Tonight, Tuesday October 13, I have been invited by David Swann to facilitate a Zoom meeting about elderhood in Calgary. It takes place from 7 to 9 PM and it will involve two highly participatory brainstorming sessions in which the participants in breakout groups will play with the ideas and creative questions I’ve presented to them in the ten-minute presentation I give just before the breakout group starts. (I give the first 10-minute presentation, then comes the first breakout session, then they reconvene and share their ideas; then I give the second 10-minute session, and they do another breakout brainstorm and reconvene to share their ideas again.)

Here is the overview of what I will present, with three questions to be used as the starting point in the breakout sessions. Part one will focus on successful aging and part two on connecting their ideas about successful aging with ideas for building a vibrant community in Calgary. I send this to you because it is highly relevant for the purposes of the Calgary Social Capital Society, and so it would be a good thing if you can join us, even if you arrive late and only participate in the second half (8 to 9 PM). The Zoom link is appended below. Here’s the overview with the questions.

Successful Aging and Vibrant Community

Successful aging is supported by healthy diet, exercise, ongoing creative use of our cognitive capacity, good social interactions; and getting enough sleep, while reducing negative stress. All these are important at any age. As we grow older, we can coach each other in those areas; and share our wisdom and experience with Calgarians of all ages. We can thereby foster a vibrant community.

Here are some questions to get your ideas flowing:

1. If you and a few friends decided to meet once each week for a “successful aging team practice session,” how would you structure the program?

2. If you were asked to be a “life coach” for a person much younger than you, perhaps between fifteen and thirty years of age, someone who resembles yourself at that age, what would you want to include in the life coaching program? For example, are there things you wish you had known much earlier in life that you would like to include in your life coaching program for this youngster?

3. If you were asked to create an annual event in Calgary that would encourage young Calgarians to tap into the wisdom and experience of the elders, how would you structure that annual event?
